Our First Illness

Poor Chloe has some sort of viral illness (or at least, that's what we think). Believe it or not, this is the first time she has ever really been sick. Sure, she was born premature and stayed in NICU for a while, but she was never sick while there. She ran a low fever once as a baby, but one dose of Tylenol and she was fine. So I have to admit that I wasn't one hundred percent sure what to do. The thing that scared me the most is that she's not old enough to have the concept of "hurt" down yet. She can't answer the question "What hurts?"

When she went down for nap around 2:00 yesterday she was fine by all outward appearances. When she woke up from nap at 6:15(!) her cheeks were flushed. It took a while before I realized how hot she was. I took her temperature wondering where I should draw the line between just giving her Tylenol and calling the doctor. When we reached 102.7 I decided to call the doctor to be safe.

I felt a bit silly calling the office, but I explained to the nurse that she's never been sick. The nurse was very understanding; she's wonderful that way. Apparently there's some viral stuff going around especially in kids right now which is lasting 72 hours. After some directions from the nurse and a call home to my mom, we got some medicine going. I realize if I would have just stopped to think about the times when I was sick I probably would have been able to figure out what to do. Oh well.

The fever went down after giving her Advil last night. When I put Julia back to bed at 4:00 this morning, Chloe got out of bed. I had checked her forehead when I got Julia out of bed, and it felt fine. I decided to take the opportunity to feel her forehead again, and this time it was hot. I took her in the living room, took her temperature (only 100), changed her diaper, and tried to get her to drink some more water. She acted like she was wide awake and ready to start the day when she got out of bed. By the time she had sipped some water she was asking for a nap. Now here it is 10:00, and she's still sleeping.

It breaks my heart to see her feeling yucky. Sorry this was probably more than you cared to hear, but hey, that's life around here right now.

I am sorry to hear that chloe is not feeling good but I understand what you are saying it is hard to see them sick because you feel helpless like what should you do to make them well. Adam has been sick more often that Noah ever was so I still call the doctor when he has a fever. It is hard to know if he has ear infection, teeth hurt or head hurt when they can not tell you what hurts. I will pray that Chloe feels better.
